What traditional law firm SEO does, and where it stops
Traditional SEO gets your website ranking in Google's organic results for terms like 'car accident lawyer [city].' That still drives real traffic and remains worth doing. But it optimizes for one system: Google's blue-link index. It does nothing for the separate, fast-growing channel where someone opens an AI assistant and simply asks which lawyer to hire. Those two systems select results in completely different ways.
How AI answers pick which firms to name
When someone asks an AI engine for the best lawyer in a city, the engine runs a live search, retrieves a set of sources, and writes its answer from them. For 'best lawyer' style questions, engines overwhelmingly retrieve legal directories such as Super Lawyers, Avvo, and Justia rather than individual firm websites, because directories list many firms in one comparable, structured place. If your firm is missing from the directories the engine trusts, you are missing from the answer, no matter how strong your website SEO is.
Why your firm can rank on Google yet be invisible to AI
Three things commonly cause it: your site blocks the AI crawlers (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot) at the firewall so the engines cannot read it; you are absent from the high-authority directories those engines cite; or your firm's name and listings are inconsistent enough that AI cannot resolve you to one trusted entity. None of these are fixed by traditional SEO, because traditional SEO targets a different system.
What to do about it
Keep your traditional SEO, and add AI visibility work on top: confirm AI crawlers can reach your site, get listed and optimized on the directories AI actually cites (weighted by how many engines cite each one), publish answer-first content, and clean your Google Business Profile so Google's own AI can recommend you. AdaptLegal measures exactly where your firm stands on each of these across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI.
Frequently asked questions
Is law firm SEO dead?
No. Traditional SEO still drives valuable search traffic. But it no longer covers the AI-answer channel, where a growing share of clients now start, so firms need both.
Will good SEO get my firm cited by ChatGPT?
Not on its own. ChatGPT builds lawyer recommendations mostly from legal directories, so directory presence and clean entity data matter more than website ranking for that channel.
